Egyptians Abroad: Bremer Schlussel

Men’s $12k PSA Challenger, 08-12 Aug, Bremen, Germany

Aly Abou Eleinen became the Tour’s newest first-time winner on Friday afternoon, as he claimed the victory at the Bremer Schlussel in Germany, defeating the Czech Republic’s Viktor Byrtus in straight games in the final at ULC Sportwelt in Bremen.

Eleinen came into the Challenger 10 level competition as the No.3 seed, and the World No.63 received a bye through to the second round, before then starting off his campaign with a solid victory over Welshman Elliott Morris Devred on Tuesday evening.

The young Egyptian continued his imperious form through the tournament to defeat England’s Stuart MacGregor and compatriot Mazen Gamal, the latter being the No.2 seed for the competition, on his way to a fourth Tour final, in the hopes of securing a first title.

That was exactly what he did, as he came up against the Czech Republic’s Viktor Byrtus in the final, another man aiming to achieve the same feat. Byrtus had taken out two of the top five seeds on his way to the final, but Eleinen proved too good in Bremen on Friday afternoon, winning in straight games to clinch his maiden Tour title, and to do so without dropping a game all week.
