Ali said

“I’m really hungry to start the season again. My injury last season was a blessing in disguise because it rejuvenated me with hunger and passion for the game.

“I had a good block of training over the summer and I’m happy with the two performances I’ve put in so far and I’m looking forward to the rest of the tournament.”

Nouran said:

“It wasn’t easy against World No.9 Olivia. I think that’s one of the toughest draws you can get in the third round, but I’m glad I got this draw to prepare for the next match.

“I played well but I think I can play better. It’s a good step towards the next match of the tournament.

“I was happy I was able to clinch it 11-5 [the first game]. It made a big difference because when you’re one up it’s different than being 1-0 down as it’s going to give her confidence. I knew this and I knew I had to start strong so I’m happy with that.

“The first match I played was a shorter match and the temperature was a bit lower. Today it was a bit bouncier, which I like. It looks like an indoor court but it’s an outdoor court because the temperature really plays a big role and you have to adapt whether it’s cold or hot on the day.

“I love it! I’ve always been a fan of the French culture and the French language. I had my Tecnifibre team supporting me today with them being a French brand. Being here feels like home even though it’s my first time here. I love it and I hope they can keep on supporting me.”

Tarek said:

“I felt okay, I felt good. I don’t think I played my best – I think I played okay but there were far too many errors and the third game was better than the first two games.

“When I got my lines in the right place, I had a good strategy, I didn’t play badly but it’s just the errors when the ball is just sitting there and there were too many.

“I was getting better, but at the same time I had a tough match yesterday so there wasn’t much recovery and I was a bit flat. All things considered I did well today and to dispatch an opponent like Leonel in three is a good win for me.”

World No.3 Hania El Hammamy battled back from two games down to defeat World No.10 Tinne Gilis 3-2 for a place in the third round of the Paris Squash 2023 at the Parvis du Palais de Tokyo.

Gilis, who climbed into the top ten of the PSA World Rankings for the first time recently, clinched the first two games 11-5 and 11-9 following two clinical displays.

An unforced error from Gilis at game ball for El Hammamy in the third opened the door for the World No.3 to get back into the contest as she halved the deficit, before restoring parity in the fourth with an 11-5 success.

The 22-year-old dominated the middle of the court in the fifth, and she went on to close out the match and progress to the next round.

Afterwards, El Hammamy said: “It was a very tough match today against Tinne. She played absolutely brilliantly and threw everything at me, but I’m so proud of the way I came back into the game after being 2-0 down. I tried to dig in, and I wasn’t finding my lines, and I wasn’t firing my shots. I was working towards that after being 2-0 down.”
