Round One

Mazen Gamal  3-1 [9/16] Todd Harrity (Usa)   4-11, 12-10, 11-8, 11-7 (59m)

Lee Ka Yi (Hkg) 3-1 [9/16] Mariam Metwally  11-7, 7-11, 11-4, 12-10 (35m)
[9/16] Menna Hamed 3-0 Ooi Kah Yah (Mas)   11-9, 11-6, 11-4 (29m)
[wc] Aifa Azman (Mas) 3-0 [9/16] Mayar Hany 11-8, 11-3, 11-5 (23m)
[9/16] Hana Ramadan 3-0 [wc] Chan Yiwen (Mas) 11-8, 11-3, 11-9 (24m)
[9/16] Nada Abbas 3-0 Menna Nasser   4-1 rtd (5m)

If Mazen Gamal surprised the seeding by overtaking American but Cairo based Todd Harrity, it was a bit of a disappointment for Mayar Hany who bowed to Aifa Azman, the wild card from Malaysia, and also for Mariam Metwally, losing to Lee Ka Yi from Hong Kong, narrowly missing out on pushing the match to a decider. Bad news also for Menna Nasser who had to retire in the first game against Nada Abbas, who will play yet another Egyptian, seed 2 Nadine Shahin!

No worries for Menna Hamed, 3/0 victory against Malaysian Ooi Kah Yah. She plays Hollie Naughton in the second round, while Mazen will face number 2 seed Indian Saurav Ghosal.

After a long period of uncertainty, the 50K Bronze Malaysian Squash Open is finally back on the calendar after last year’s edition became a casualty of the pandemic due to the many lockdowns and travel restrictions the nation had faced.

2013 world junior champion Karim El Hammamy, whose sister Hania won the World Junior Championship title here in KL in 2019, will be hoping to do good in the famous event, along with world No 17 Youssef Soliman.

The women’s competition will be led by world No 8 CIB Salma Hany and world No 14 Nadine Shahin, joined by Mariam Metwally, Yathred Adel, CIB Farida Mohamed, Hana Ramadan
and Nada Abbas.
