Egyptian Squash Federation Mourns Hany Hamouda

 

 

It’s with great sadness that we have to say goodbye of one of our more precious Squash family members.

For more than 40 years, Mr Hany Hamouda has given all his energy, love and care to our sport and has carried the Egyptian Flag high and proud all over the world. Aged 64, An Egyptian Squash Federation board member since 2008, President of the African Federation since 2013, he was also Vice-President of the Egyptian Squash Federation.

He passed away today, 15th January, after a week in intensive care after contracting COVID*19, and will be buried tomorrow 16th January, after prayer.

Hany leaves behind his wife, Dr. Manal Elhakim, and two daughters, Alia and Gayda.

His “partner in crime” for years, his “compagnon d’armes since forever”, President of the Egyptian Squash Federation Assem Khalifa was broken by the news.

“I don’t know what to say about my brother.

Hany was not just a colleague, he was so much more than that. He was a gentleman, he was a fair man, he wasn’t looking for rewards or thanks, he loved our sport passionately, squash was part of his soul, his spirit.

During all our years of friendship, I never saw him do any harm to anybody. And I wish our 15 years friendship would have lasted much much longer. I wish I had met him before…

Hany was one of a kind, a truly special soul, one incredible being that you encounter o so rarely. So much to say about him, but no words can express my feelings as this point…”

The World Squash Federation (WSF) saluted Hany Hamouda’s impact on our sport.

“Hany’s death leaves behind a huge void in the squash community, in which he was greatly respected and loved for his friendship, integrity and generosity.” said WSF President Zena Wooldridge.

“Hany served WSF and his region with distinction. The contributions he has made to squash in Africa and Egypt in particular will live on forever. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, who must be heartbroken.”

WSF CEO, Mr William Louis-Marie said “Since I have joined the WSF, I have been fortunate to work with Hany, a passionate of our sport who has always been there to provide guidance. I will always remember his good spirit and our endless discussions on the future of squash in Africa, a continent which has always been close to his heart. He will continue to inspire us all.”

Mr Andrew Shelley, former England Squash executive director, WISPA CEO and more recently former WSF CEO, expressed his sadness after hearing the news.

‘Hany was a leader of squash in Egypt and Africa (President, African Federation). A lovely, kind man who I first met in 1980 is a huge loss to our world.

‘It is very easy to say that somebody was special, but Hany really was. Actually, more than special.

‘I first met him when he came to England to play in the British Amateur. Much later he was running women’s events in his city of Alexandria, and since then a VP of the Egyptian Federation, and President of the African Federation.

‘But he was not interested in positions for their sake – he loved squash and wanted to give of himself to the sport. And all with warmth, friendliness and generosity that is rare to find. His family have lost a gem of a man. His friends have too, and I am proud to have been one. He will brighten up heaven’.
